This course must be completed as part of the registration process for all Level 1 and Level 2 Protection Officers. The completion of this course is also a legal requirement to work as a protection officer on the Sydney Trains network.

The course is designed to equip rail safety workers with the skills and knowledge to apply effective safety critical communications, as well as best practice for general communications, in the rail environment.

Course participants will learn how to accurately communicate, provide timely and accurate rail operational information, and respond to unplanned situations or events appropriately.

Prerequisite: You must be Protection Officer Level 1 in order to enrol in this course.

Safety critical communications is any communication that, if not delivered or not delivered accurately or promptly, could result in death, serious injury or incur significant damage to property, infrastructure or the environment.

Course participants will learn how to accurately communicate, provide timely and accurate rail operational information, and respond to unplanned situations or events appropriately.

Course Duration: 1 Day

Learning outcomes

Apply safety critical communication behaviours to your role in the rail environment

Apply communications protocol, including the use of standard phrases

Provide read backs and conformations using concise and unambiguous phrases

Communicate timely and accurate operational information and coordination such as location information, hazards, risks and network conditions

Issue rail operations information in accordance with workplace procedures

Respond to unplanned situations by obtaining sufficient information from relevant sources and prioritising needs in accordance with workplace procedures

Assessment

Assessment is a combination of written questions/answers and practical demonstrations.

Statement of Attainment

Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded with a Statement of Attainment for TLIF0008 – Apply Safety Critical Communications in the Rail Environment. Please note: if your course took place on Friday or over the weekend your Statement of Attainment will not be sent until the following Monday.

AGE REQUIREMENTS

Course participants must be over the age of 18.

Please wear appropriate clothing, this includes long pants and enclosed shoes.

What you should bring

Please bring your Government Issued Photo ID.

Please be advised that lunch is not provided, please bring your own lunch or there is a small tuck shop a 5 minute walk from our venue.
